“Hello, Mummy. I’ve been waiting for you.”

Sarah and Stephen want a baby. But they’ve been trying for a long time without success. They’ve rented a cottage in the country for the weekend. To get away from London. To get away from the stress of their jobs. To get away from not talking about the test results that are due back next week.

Sarah is cleaning out the cottage fireplace when she finds something hidden inside the chimney breast. A pair of tiny shoes. Old, worn and covered in soot.
