In the Shadows

In the Shadows

We shall not ever meet them bearded in heaven,
Nor sunning themselves among the bald in hell;”

[On the Death of Friends in Childhood – Donald Justice]

The death of a daughter. A brother. A best friend. Which grief is strongest? Stephen is struggling to come to terms with his daughter’s death. Sorting through boxes of things from his past – old photographs, vinyl records – he starts to sing Tom Robinson’s “Wish I had a Grey Cortina”, but is interrupted by Nic, his best friend from school, who died in a car accident aged 20.
